#MSDYNGP: Named Printers and Redirected Printers in RDP environments

Image
A lot of the guiding principles for deploying Named Printers in a Terminal Server or Citrix environment comes from two of my favorite articles, written by my good friend and fellow Microsoft Business Applications MVP, David Musgrave  (twitter: @winthropdc ). David happens to be the creator of Named Printers and probably understands the product better than anyone I know. You can read his articles here: Using Named Printers with Terminal Server Using Named Printers with Terminal Server Revisited These articles continue to be very relevant if you are in an environment where a Print (or Printer) server is the norm and published printers are standard. Print servers are used to interface printers with devices in a network, but mostly to standardize administrative policies, and balance the document load that printers can manage. Part of the standardization is to ensure printers are uniquely identified across the networks, regardless of whether you are accessing the network remotely o...

Default Printer not 'sticking' when running Microsoft Dynamics GP in Terminal Services RemoteApp

Image
A bit of theory... RemoteApp programs are programs that are accessed remotely through Terminal Services and appear as if they are running on the end user's local computer. Users can run RemoteApp programs side by side with their local programs. A user can minimize, maximize, and resize the program window, and can easily start multiple programs at the same time. If a user is running more than one RemoteApp program on the same terminal server, the RemoteApp programs will share the same Terminal Services session. The following Microsoft TechNet article explains in more detail: Terminal Services RemoteApp (TS RemoteApp) Background Microsoft Dynamics GP (versions 10.0 and 2010), is currently supported in a Terminal Server RemoteApp environment, but a number of my clients and forum users have reported in numerous occasions that the Default Printer settings are not 'sticking' or simply saving when loging out of the application (which also closes the RemoteApp session) an...

Troubleshooting printing issues with Microsoft Dynamics GP

Image
Just lately, I have seen a number of inquiries over the various forums on printer support for Microsoft Dynamics GP (usually, versions 10.0 and 2010). If you have been in the channel as an ISV, partner, or customer since the days of the former Great Plains Software, you probably still remember that in the past testing of Microsoft Dynamics GP included exhaustive testing of a number of printers for compatibility. In fact, leading up to the release of version 10.0, it was not uncommon to see the now infamous Printer Compatibility List, which would outline an extensive list of printers tested for all sort of "maneuvers" including large print jobs, paper handling, character blurriness, and so on. There are still some reminiscent KB articles from back in the days when printers were tested - go grab them now before they disappear! KB article 870301 - Compatibility of Dynamics With the HP LaserJet 6L or HP LaserJet 6L SE Printer KB article 865797 - HP Offic...

Developing for Dynamics GP Weekly Summary

Image
After a long absence, my friend David Musgrave is slowly regaining his writing pulse. Please check out some of his cool articles this week, but first and foremost let him know what you think about them. I always encourage everyone to test and play with some of the code we provide in these articles. They are a good way to get acquainted with Microsoft Dynamics GP functionality. So let's get on with the articles: 1. Microsoft Dynamics GP 10.0 Service Packs, Hotfixes and Payroll Compliance/Year End Updates May Damage the Modified Reports and Forms . After a few of these errors circulating on the newsgroups, it has been confirmed by Microsoft development team. The payroll year end update will in fact damage your modified forms and reports. I have a theory on this one: since the YE update is also inclusive of service pack 3, it will be necessary to take all the precautions layed out when applying a service pack, that is, export ALL your customizations to a package file BEFORE applying ...

As the original developer of Named Printers, Dave certainly is an authority on the issue and demonstrates it in his latest entry. He makes some bold annotations to help users setup Named Printers effectively and points to some valuable articles he has contributed or in many occasions written. Stop by Dave's blog site, read up, and let him know what you think. Until next post! MG.- Mariano Gomez, MIS, MVP, MCP, PMP Maximum Global Business, LLC http://maximumglobalbusiness.com/
