Microsoft Dynamics GP upgrade path

This is the time when many people start to consider and plan upgrades, on the verge of a new release. According to Rich Miller of Microsoft Dynamics GP Product Marketing, in a recent interview with MSDynamicsWorld, "more and more people are migrating since the release of [Dynamics GP 10.0] Feature Pack 1", and it will be no surprise that upgrade will increment with the release of Microsoft Dynamics GP 11. In addition, it has been one of those topics that frequently show up on the Microsoft Dynamics GP newsgroup.

With this said, I figured I would put together a list with the possible upgrade paths for each version of GP since Dynamics 6.o and eEnterprise 6.0.

You can update to Great Plains Release 8.0 from a previous release by using one of the following paths.

6.0.XX >> 7.5 >> 8.0
eEnterprise 6.0
Dynamics 6.0 for Microsoft SQL Server

7.0 >> 8.0
eEnterprise 7.0
Dynamics 7.0 for Microsoft SQL Server

7.5 >> 8.0
Great Plains 7.5

If you are updating to Great Plains Release 8.0 from eEnterprise Release 6.0 or Dynamics Release 6.0 for Microsoft SQL Server, you must update to Release 8.0 in the following order.

• Update to Great Plains Release 7.5.
• Convert your data using Great Plains Release 7.5 Utilities.
• Update to Great Plains Release 8.0.

From Great Plains 8.0 Service Pack 5 on, follow these upgrade paths:

Is there anything you need to watch out for when going from GP10 SP 1 to GP10 FR1 with SP3? Do you apply it as you would any other service pack?

Thanks,
Greg

Greg,

Much thanks for your inquiry! There are a few things to watch out for:

1) Make sure you follow all the directions provided in the Hot Topics page https://mbs.microsoft.com/customersource/support/selfsupport/hottopics/hot_topic_mdgp10_modifiedreportsformsupdaterequiredforpatchreleases.htm?printpage=false.

2) Backup ALL your data, including the Dynamics database.

3) Export ALL your customizations to a package file.

4) Make a backup of ALL your forms and reports customization dictionaries -- this is aside from the package file.

Good luck,

Mariano,
Thank you for the reply. I did not realize that you needed to update reports and forms dictionaries for service packs. What I am still unclear on is this - is there a difference between V10 SP3 (meaning if I run the service pack on my current V10 SP1 environment), is there any difference to V10 Feature pack 1 with SP3? I know the download for FR1 is a full install and want to make sure that I am not missing any functionality by just installing SP3 and is it not necasarry to uninstall V10 in order to install V10 FR1.

Thanks,
Greg

Hi, I want to know where can I download Microsoft Dynamics GP 10.0 Trial in Spanish Language. Thanks
Mariano Gomez said…
Richard,

Thanks for your inquiry. There is no public trial of Microsoft Dynamics GP 10 in Spanish. The only trial available via MSDN is the English version.

If you are a customer, you should be able to download the Spanish version from CustomerSource.

Inside my company Great Plains How do I get a list of what modules/application I have on my current Great Plains?

I'm upgrading right now from quicbooks, is this even of use to me? What service pack would I have?
Mariano Gomez said…
Roger,
Typically, and depending what version of QB you are on, Microsoft offers what they label as a Rapid Migration Tool. I am not sure if RTM is available for version 2010, but I sure know there is one for version 10.0. Contact Microsoft Support for any additional information you may require on the tool itself, or if you believe I can be of assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Hi Mariano -

We are on version 8 SP1 (8.0.69).
We would like to go to GP 2010 R2. We are also running SQL 2000 SP4. We want to upgrade to SQL 2008 R2 as well.

What is the best way to migrate to minimize upgrade steps required?

In other words, Can I go to the 9.00.0371 version of 9.00 - directly from SP1 of 8.00? If I can do that then I won't have to waste my time updating 8.0 to SP5, and I can then take it directly to version 2010 R2. I am unable to locate any information on this so any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, RS
